Victim of ATV crash dies in hospital

One of the victims of an all-terrain vehicle crash on July 1 near McLouth died Friday at the hospital.

Chase William Coffin, 23, of McLouth and the Oskaloosa area, died Friday at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. On Friday, a hospital spokeswoman said an update on his condition was unavailable because family members could not be located to authorize it.

Coffin and Robert Robinson, 22, of Lawrence, were riding the Suzuki ATV around 3 a.m. when they lost control of the vehicle as it approached a bridge near 54th and Washington roads, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle rolled over the bridge railing and fell 10 feet. Hospital spokeswoman Elizabeth Schonfeldt said Saturday afternoon that Robinson remained in the hospital in serious condition.

A funeral service for Coffin will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at McLouth First Baptist Church.
