Bridge hardship

To the editor:

In regards to the closing of the Lecompton bridge: I’m saddened at how many people want to put a price on the safety of our children. If it costs a little more to get our kids safely back and forth to school it shouldn’t matter.

Another thing that I don’t think Lawrence has thought about in this issue is that I hear and read plenty of complaints about traffic in Lawrence, especially at Sixth and Wakarusa, and how much more there will be with the new development there. Has anyone thought about how bad it will be if the Lecompton bridge closes and everyone has to take a detour through Lawrence just to get to Perry? Not only will the Perry-Lecompton students be at risk, but also students trying to get in and out of Free State High School.

I live north of the bridge. The only problem my family will have with the closing at that time is my youngest. Along with many others, my child attends preschool in Lecompton because the Grantville school fills up very fast and there’s no other preschool that I know of for the kids in the district. With the closing of the bridge, it would mean (at least for me) that my child won’t attend preschool next year and that could affect her future.

I don’t know what can be done, but I do know that we should think about how much stress closing the bridge will give our already stressed-out children.
