A safe 4th

To the editor:

I am often stupefied at the severe lack of common sense in today’s world. These easy rules will keep you happy and safe while you celebrate the Fourth of July:

1. Know what the firework does. Some fireworks are so popular that nearly everyone knows what they do and how to use them, but if there is any doubt in your mind then read the label on the packaging or the fireworks.

2. Fireworks contain gun powder. It’s a simple fact, but occasionally people forget that they are dealing with potential weapons. Treat them with the same respect and care as you would give a loaded gun. Let people around you know when you are lighting a firework. Set aside an area away from spectators in which to light fireworks.

3. Parents, be parents. Supervise and know what fireworks your kids have. Nearly half of fireworks-related accidents happen to kids under 15. Let your kids have fun, but also set limits to what they can set off and what they can’t set off. On the other side of that, let them explore the limits you set. They will quickly discover what they can and can’t do themselves.

We occasionally forget these rules. When that happens, people get injured, buildings get damaged and the joy of celebrating our nation’s independence ourselves is lost forever. Following these rules will help the citizens of Lawrence prove to our local government that we are capable of celebrating our nation’s independence responsibly. Viva fireworks!
