Hereford House posts closure sign

Lawrence’s largest steakhouse has closed its doors, at least for now.

According to a sign posted on its entrance, the Hereford House at Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive is closed “until further notice.” Owners of the 16,000-square-foot restaurant have previously acknowledged sagging sales. Several months ago the restaurant – which opened in Lawrence in 2000 – dropped many of its lunchtime hours and switched to primarily serving the supper crowd or special events.

Attempts to reach Rod Anderson – president of the restaurant’s Kansas City, Mo.-based ownership group – were unsuccessful on Monday.

The restaurant originally had posted a sign last week that said the restaurant was closed for maintenance until July 5, but that sign was changed sometime Friday afternoon. The company’s Web site on Friday also no longer listed a Lawrence location for the restaurant chain.
