A car reported stolen early Friday was found several hours later abandoned in the Kansas River at Riverfront Park.

The car, a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, was seen in the water about 8:45 a.m. by Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department workers, a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said. It was about 70 feet from the east bank.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical, the Douglas County underwater search and recovery team, and Lawrence Police responded to the call. No one was thought to have been injured.

A 21-year-old Lawrence woman reported to police the car was taken from the 300 block of Minnesota Street. It had been stolen and recovered twice before, the sheriff’s office said.
