Wary pedestrian

To the editor:

As a pedestrian with 28 years of experience walking to work in Lawrence, I could not agree more with the editorial “Crossing courtesy” in Monday’s paper. However, what is missing is any mention of the inattention motorists give to pedestrians in crosswalks with stop signs, traffic lights and roundabouts.

Twice in the past week I have had to put my hand out and actually touch cars that began right turns from a full stop. The drivers on Ohio and Tennessee only looked to the left at oncoming traffic on 19th Street and paid no attention to me in the crosswalk coming from their right! The turn from Tennessee was begun with the light still red! And, not all motorists yield to pedestrians crossing at the 19th and Barker roundabout as required by state law – as the colorful signs clearly state. I do, however, give a cheerful wave of thanks to all who do yield. Keep on walking.
