Anhydrous ammonia leak investigated

For the second time in a month, sheriff’s deputies found anhydrous ammonia leaking from a tank at Midland Junction north of Lawrence.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s officer discovered the leak about 11:15 p.m. Sunday at the Midland Co-Op, 1419 North 1941 Diagonal Road, said Lt. Doug Woods, a sheriff’s spokesman. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Crews were called to help contain the leak.

The cause remains under investigation. On Jan. 2, deputies saw a suspect tampering with tanks at the same place.
