Tips on collecting oral history offered

An oral history workshop will be conducted Saturday at St. Luke AME Church, 900 N.Y.

The workshop will be from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oral history has been especially important in the black community as a way to pass on not only history but also traditions.

One of the workshop presenters will be Sherrie Tucker, an associate professor of American studies at Kansas University and a nationally recognized expert in oral history.

Other presenters will be:

¢ Geneva Price, oral historian and workshop trainer, who has been collecting oral histories of women in jazz for the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Mo.

¢ Dorothy Pennington, associate professor of African and African-American Studies at KU. She has conducted research on the history of Lawrence’s black churches.

The workshop is open to the public, but seating is limited. Participants can register in advance by calling Nancy Hiebert at 842-4635 or 550-5019.
