Area high schools to compete in QUEST

Teams from Lawrence and Free State high schools and others in the area will demonstrate their knowledge as part of a TV game show beginning in February.

The 16-team QUEST television tournament will begin at 10:30 p.m. Feb. 5 with a contest between Ottawa and Wichita East High School. KTWU, Sunflower Broadband channel 11, will broadcast the shows.

Perry-Lecompton will face Kapaun Mount Carmel on Feb. 12; Lawrence will face Clifton-Clyde on March 12; Mill Valley High School will face Topeka West on March 19; and, Free State will face Pittsburg on March 26.

The teams are part of a 16-team single-elimination tournament to determine the state champion. The field was determined after students from about 100 high schools took a written examination at Washburn University in December.

Laura Lorson of Kansas Public Radio will host the QUEST series.

Donna LaLonde, dean of the Washburn University honors program and associate professor of mathematics and statistics, will judge.
