No decision on moving health services for vets

No decision has been reached about the possible moving of psychiatric inpatient services for veterans from Leavenworth to Topeka.

The issue was discussed Wednesday by the advisory board for Eastern Kansas Health Care, which manages the Dwight D. Eisenhower Veterans Administration Medical Center in Leavenworth and Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka. The advisory board met at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt. No vote on the matter was taken, said Jim Gleisberg, spokesman for Eastern Kansas Health. The matter is still being studied, he said.

Eastern Kansas Health is considering a recommendation that 14 beds used for psychiatric in-services at the Leavenworth VA hospital be moved to the Topeka VA hospital. Eastern Kansas Health has said it has been difficult to hire nurses for Leavenworth.

Serving on the advisory board are representatives of Eastern Kansas Health, veterans organizations, federal employee unions and the staffs of Kansas U.S. Reps. Dennis Moore, a Democrat, and Jim Ryun, a Republican.
