Free State boys survive Newton

? Kyle Schreiner and David Green each scored 18 as the Free State High boys basketball team overcame a turnover-plagued first half Saturday to secure a 56-46 victory over Newton in the fifth-place game at the McPherson Invitational.

Despite forcing 26 turnovers, the Firebirds (5-7) had their own problems holding on to the ball during the opening two quarters.

“We were horrendous in the first half in terms of taking care of the basketball,” Free State coach Chuck Law said. “It was difficult to watch. The second half, we just started to complete some plays.”

Law gave special mention to Schreiner, who also totaled seven assists, seven steals and five rebounds.

The Firebirds will return to action Friday in a non-league clash at Topeka High.
