Beneficial bats
To the editor:
I was interested in the article last week about the bat that found its way into Mr. Snead’s home and grateful for his successful efforts to remove the bat without harm. Thank you also for providing the brief facts summary about bats. An excellent resource for information about bats is Bat Conservation International, found at www.batcon.org.
Bats are highly beneficial for our gardens and outdoor spaces, and not at all inclined to attack humans, unless frightened. A concern over rabies makes many people uncomfortable about them, but incidences of bats carrying rabies are extremely rare.
A little research about bats, and the fantastic and wonderful experience of once watching the nightly flight of millions of bats from beneath the Congress Avenue bridge in Austin, helped me develop a much better understanding of them. Thank you again for sharing the happy-ending story of Mr. Snead’s bat.
