Many offices closed for holiday

Government offices in Lawrence and Douglas County will be closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

They also will be closed in most area towns.

All city, county and state offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the General Services Administration and the federal courts.

The Douglas County Commission will not meet this morning.

Banks will be closed.

Lawrence Transit System buses will run. Parking meters will not be monitored downtown.

Sanitation route schedules will not be disrupted. Commercial collections will run as scheduled today.

The Lawrence Public Library will be open.

South Park Recreation Center and Prairie Park Nature Center will be closed. Holcom Park and East Lawrence recreation centers, along with the Community Building, will be open.

Aquatic Division offices will be closed, but the Indoor Aquatic Center and Carl Knox Natatorium will open.

Eagle Bend Golf Course will be open.

All recreational classes and adult sports leagues will play as scheduled. Special population classes and youth sports leagues will not play.

Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department’s offices and clinic will be closed.

Douglas County Senior Services Inc. and the Lawrence Senior Center will be closed. All activities, including clubs, classes and the noon meal, will be canceled. Meals will not be served at Babcock Place, Edgewood Place, Lecompton, Eudora and Baldwin.

Bus 62 services also will be canceled.

Meals on Wheels will deliver.

The Lawrence Workforce Center will be closed.

Kansas University offices will be closed, as will campus libraries and most museums. The Dole Institute of Politics will be open.

The post office will be closed and regular deliveries will not be made. Express Mail deliveries will be made.

Liquor stores will be open.

The business office at the Journal-World will be open.

USA Today will be delivered.
