Linwood man arrested after alleged violation

A man convicted in the 1987 stabbing death of a Douglas County man was arrested Friday morning in Johnson County on a charge of violating his parole.

Gregory Thomas, 46, Linwood, was booked into the Johnson County Jail after a warrant from the Kansas Department of Corrections had been issued for his arrest, according to jail records.

Thomas was convicted on Feb. 5, 1988, of second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery in Douglas County, stemming from a fight on July 15, 1987, at a mobile home in east Lawrence during a party.

Testimony at his trial indicated that after Thomas was forced to leave the party, he returned armed with a bayonet-type knife and stabbed Stephen R. Howell, 24, who later died, and injured two other men.

He was sentenced to serve 10 years to life in prison for the murder conviction.

Department of Corrections records reveal that Thomas was first granted parole in 1999, and he was arrested for a parole violation in October 2001. He was granted parole again in March 2004.

Details on why he is again accused of violating his parole were unavailable this weekend.
