Former director of planning office now a city consultant

She doesn’t have the title of planning director anymore, but Linda Finger is continuing to work for the city of Lawrence and Douglas County.

Finger resigned as director of the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning office effective Dec. 31 but is continuing as a city consultant, she said. She also is working for the county to revise rural subdivision regulations, a project she started as planning director.

County Administrator Craig Weinaug said he checked with Lawrence City Manager Mike Wildgen to see if it was OK if Finger continued work on the subdivision regulations until the project was completed.

“We just agreed to move her desk down here. I found space for her,” Weinaug said, referring to the Douglas County Courthouse.

Finger is paid out of the city-county planning department budget, which is one-sixth funded by the county, Weinaug said.

Finger said her role for the city and county would end June 30.

Finger began her job as planning director in 1994. She announced her resignation in November, shortly after city commissioners became critical of the planning process when it was thought the population in northwest Lawrence was rapidly outpacing the capacity of the sewer system.

At the time, Finger said she was resigning because she didn’t think there was a long-term future for her in the planning office.

This week, Finger said she wasn’t sure what she would do after June 30.

“I’m looking at options, working on resumes and doing what people do at this stage,” she said.

The search for a new planning director is continuing.
