Lawful cycling

To the editor:

I have to get this off my chest. Today as I was driving to work, I was sitting at the corner of 13th and Connecticut, at the stop sign, waiting to turn left onto Connecticut. No cars were coming so I started to turn left. A guy on a bike, also on 13th but coming toward me, speeds right through the stop sign on the other side of Connecticut right in front of me. I have to stop midturn to avoid hitting him. I honked, and the jerk had the nerve to flip me off, when he’s the one breaking the law!

Ironically, on my way home I see another guy on a bike pedaling on the wrong side of Rhode Island in front of me. He rides right through the stop sign at 13th and Rhode Island to turn left, and then as I watch him, he goes right through a second stop sign and crosses Connecticut.

I am so tired of bicyclists not obeying the traffic laws. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve nearly been mowed over in the crosswalk at Ninth and New Hampshire by bicyclists who don’t want to stop at the four-way stop. Plenty of my friends bike all around town, and I occasionally ride to work, and we all obey the traffic laws. I know it’s a few bad apples giving everyone else a bad name. But please, if you’re on a bike, just follow the law. It’s not that hard!
