Driver killed in one-vehicle accident on county road

A Douglas County woman died Friday evening after a rollover accident five miles south of Lawrence at a curve on Douglas County Road 460.

Medical units and deputies were called at 4:51 p.m. to the scene about two miles west of the Zarco 66 station on U.S. Highway 59, said Lt. Kari Wempe, spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident investigation revealed that the woman was driving a 1994 Dodge truck west on County Road 460 when she approached the curve to head south.

She failed to negotiate the curve, and the truck’s wheels left the road before she lost control, Wempe said.

The vehicle then entered a ditch on the east side of the road. The truck rolled over and ejected the woman, who was the only person in the vehicle.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical workers pronounced the woman dead at the scene. She was not identified Friday night as officers continued to notify her family members.

Originally, a medical helicopter was dispatched to the area, but it was called off. At least two ambulances with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical made it to the scene before it was declared a fatal accident.

Wempe said investigators received statements from people who witnessed the accident.
