City removes bushes near fatality site
Overgrown honeysuckle bushes at the corner of Harper Street and East 25th Terrace have been removed by city workers.
“There’s been quite a bit of public concern about it,” said Mark Hecker, superintendent of parks and facilities for the city. “The property owner was having difficulty physically, so we helped her out.”
The shrubbery was cited as a factor in a traffic accident last month that killed 6-year-old Bryce Olsen. The driver of the vehicle that struck the boy as he rode his scooter said he didn’t see the child because the shrubs blocked his view.
No charges were filed against the driver, in part, because the district attorney took into account the obstructed view.
Other motorists also had complained about the bushes, which were larger than allowed by city regulations.
A story in Tuesday’s Journal-World noted the shrubs remained a problem. At that time city officials promised the situation would soon be rectified.
