KU women get road win

? Kansas University’s women’s basketball team no longer is 0-for-the-road.

KU picked up its first road victory of the season Saturday, a 57-56 overtime decision over Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum, giving the Jayhawks their first season sweep of the Cyclones since 2000.

KU improved to 2-0 this season in overtime games and 6-0 in games decided by five points or fewer, but just 1-6 in road games.

Iowa State (15-9 overall, 6-7 Big 12 Conference) led from the start. It was a sluggish first half. ISU led just 8-4 with 13:11 left, and neither team scored over the next five minutes.

The Cyclones took a 24-18 lead into halftime.

KU (15-9, 4-9) took its first lead at 31-30 with 14:19 left. There were five lead changes and three ties the rest of the way.

Marija Zinic sparked KU down the stretch with 12 points in the second half and a career-high 14 on the day.

Zinic scored Kansas’ last eight points in regulation, but a three-pointer from ISU junior Lyndsey Medders with nine seconds left sent the game to OT. Medders’ shot came moments after she went down because of an injury. KU senior Erica Hallman quickly raced down the court to put up a last-second shot, but couldn’t find an opening.

In the extra period, Hallman drained a three-pointer. ISU responded with six straight points and led by three with under a minute to play, but Hallman converted an off-balance layup with 47 second left.

ISU missed a trey, KU junior Sharita Smith grabbed her career-high seventh rebound off the miss. Hallman took off for the other end and penetrated the lane, where she found an open Crystal Kemp, who put in her first bucket since the first half for the game-winner.

Hallman led all KU scorers with 18 points to go with six rebounds. Kemp finished with 16.

ISU senior Brittany Wilkins led the Cyclones with 18 points, while sophomore Lisa Bildeaux added a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.

Kansas will play its final road game Wednesday, when it travels to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
