Kellerman grabs gold

LHS wins regional title, qualifies 10 for state

? Nolan Kellerman will have plenty of company at this year’s Class 6A state wrestling tournament.

But he’ll be the only member of this year’s Lawrence High contingent heading to Wichita with a regional title on his resume.

The Lions advanced six wrestlers to the championship round of Saturday’s 6A regional at Olathe East, and with another four grapplers competing in third-place matches guaranteed an even 10 qualifiers for next weekend’s two-day state meet.

However, Kellerman was the only one who walked away with gold, beating Olathe South’s Brady Croucher in the title match at 171 pounds to continue a two-season unbeaten streak.

“It’s nice. One week left, and nine years is coming to an end,” said Kellerman, who has decided against wrestling in college. “It’s been a pretty strong year. Hopefully, I can finish out on top.”

Last year’s champ at 160 pounds, Kellerman has faced little opposition since bumping up a weight class. He recorded pins in each of his first two regional matches before cruising past Croucher, 7-1, in the final.

That victory capped a humbling championship round for the Lions, who nonetheless easily won the team title with 150.5 points. The total could have been much higher had all five wrestlers who preceded Kellerman in finals matches not lost.

“We wrestled really tough the first several rounds to get ourselves in a position to have 10 (state) qualifiers. I can’t say we had an excellent performance in the last round,” LHS coach Mark Dulgarian said.

“I don’t know if we relaxed. But by the time you get to the finals, your competition is going to be pretty tough. You can’t make a mistake.”

Free State couldn’t match its crosstown rival in the number of finalists (three) or state qualifiers (six), yet came home with the same number of gold medals.

Senior K.J. Siebert rode a first-round bye, a pin and an 8-1 decision over Lawrence High’s Brendan Halpin to win the 152-pound title and earn a third straight trip to state.

“I haven’t won so many tournaments in my wrestling career. I guess you could say it’s nice to win the right tournaments at the right time,” Siebert said. “I’m excited for next weekend.”

Whatever happens in Wichita, Siebert has accomplished a noteworthy double-double this year, adding a state wrestling qualification to the all-state honors he received last fall as a member of the Free State boys soccer team.

“A good soccer season (and), it’s shaping up to be a pretty good wrestling season, depending on what happens next week,” Siebert said. “I just hope I can finish it up strong, maybe get my second plaque up on that (Free State) wall.”
