Hydrant hazard

To the editor:

This is in response to the Feb. 14 article “Mishaps hamper firefighting effort.”

I cannot believe that the city of Baldwin cannot do much about the hydrants that are too old to be checked. What do people pay taxes for? Shouldn’t they be replaced?

As far as hoping that there won’t be another fire on the south side of Baldwin, that goes without saying. I’m sure that everyone on the south side of Baldwin would agree, but who wants to take the chance?

I can’t imagine that any insurance company in the United States would want to provide coverage for a city that may or may not have working fire hydrants. The firefighters, (volunteer and otherwise), can only do so much without water. It sounds to me as if they are fighting a losing battle.

How frustrating that must be to them as well as to the people who lost their home. So much for safety even though there was a hydrant in their FRONT YARD!
