Break in sprinkler line floods Corbin Hall

A frozen sprinkler line at Kansas University’s Corbin Hall burst Saturday, flooding the first three floors and damaging the dormitory’s ceilings and carpets.

The pipe burst about 3 p.m. Saturday, sending water into the second-floor hall on the far south end of the building.

When Lawrence-Douglas County fire crews arrived, a foot of water had accumulated on the second floor, and water had leaked into the first floor and the basement, where the KU Housing Department stores equipment.

Fire officials said the building was structurally safe and that power had been shut off to the affected wing.

But the building did suffer some initial damage, including ruined ceiling tiles and carpet on the flooded floors.

Officials said the pipe burst after it was exposed to cold air through open windows of a patio area.

An hour after they arrived, fire crews turned the building over to the housing department so they could assess damage to the building and equipment.

Fire officials said that the dorm rooms themselves were not affected by the flood, and most of the wing was reopened by Saturday afternoon.
