Home show serves as education tool
The folks at Lawrence Landscape Inc. are putting up a retaining wall, installing a new patio, planting a few trees, spreading piles of mulch and plugging in a 15-gallon bubbling brook atop a new tennis court.
Welcome to the sixth annual Lawrence Home Show.
“You’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do,” said Shad Bloomberg, a landscape designer for Lawrence Landscape. “You can generate quite a few good leads if you bring your ‘A’ game.”
The company is among 60 exhibitors lining up for the show at First Serve Tennis Center, the former Sport 2 Sport at 5200 Clinton Parkway. The show opens at 5 p.m. today and continues through Sunday.
Sponsored by the Lawrence Home Builders Assn., the event aims to showcase the latest designs, concepts and features for a range of home construction and renovation projects.
Among the show’s scheduled exhibitors are interior designers, roofers, flooring providers, bankers, electrical contractors, home builders, communications professionals, appliance retailers and mortgage lenders.
All share a common goal, said Bobbie Flory, executive director of the home builders association: Educate potential customers about what’s available as the spring building and renovation season approaches.
“This is an atmosphere where people can check stuff out,” Flory said. “Many of the competitors are there, and it’s not oriented toward making the sale right then. These people are here to share information. It’s different than a sales environment when you walk into somebody’s business.

Shad Bloomberg, Kansas City, Kan. resident, who works in design and sales for Lawrence Landscape organizes a display Thursday afternoon for The Lawrence Home Show, which will open to the public today at 5 p.m. at the First Serve Tennis Center, 5200 Clinton Parkway.
“It’s really smart for the consumers to research the products and services ahead of time, and this is a great opportunity to do that.”
Last year’s event drew more than 3,000 people, Flory said.
This year’s visitors will get to see Lawrence Landscape’s handiwork in full bloom. The company already is forcing a crabapple tree into flowering for the show, to bring life and color to the display floor.
“We soften it up a little bit,” Bloomberg said.
