Loss to Mizzou had familiar feel for KU women

Twice this winter Kansas University’s women’s basketball team has donned crimson uniforms for road games against traditional rivals.

The results have been similar.

Saturday’s 64-57 loss at Missouri was much like a six-point loss to Kansas State on Jan. 25 in Manhattan. In both instances, the Jayhawks were competitive until faltering in the late going.

With coach Bonnie Henrickson loathe to go to an unproductive bench, weariness among the starters could have been a factor, too.

“We’ve had a problem the last couple of weeks,” Henrickson said, “of standing without the ball, and waiting for Crystal (Kemp) to score.”

Kemp managed 18 points and nine rebounds Saturday against a Missouri team that had the size and athleticism inside to limit her touches.

KU had to rely heavily on outside shooting. Erica Hallman hit seven of 15 shots, including four of eight from three-point range, but Kaylee Brown, the Jayhawks’ other deep threat, was 3-for-11 from the field and 2-for-8 from three-point range.

Brown was also docked with a third of KU’s 18 turnovers.

Henrickson made two changes in the starting lineup, subbing freshman Sophronia Sallard and sophomore Jamie Boyd for Taylor McIntosh and Ivana Catic, but Sallard and Boyd spent more time on the bench than on the floor.

Saturday’s loss – the eighth in the last 10 games – may have ended the Jayhawks’ chances of earning a bid to the WNIT.

Five games remain, starting with a Wednesday night visit by Nebraska, and the Jayhawks may need to win at least two in order to have a shot at the postseason.
