Road project may affect speed, weight limits
Douglas County commissioners tonight will be asked to establish temporary speed and weight limits for roads expected to see increased traffic while work is under way on County Road 1055.
The bridge on 1055, less than a mile south of County Road 458, will be replaced. Signs will be placed establishing a detour along 458 to County Road 1057 and south to County Road 460.
Because of the detour route, traffic is expected to increase on portions of East 1500, East 1600, North 800 and North 900 roads. Keith Browning, county engineer and director of public works, is asking commissioners to adopt temporary 30 mph speed limits and 5-ton weight limits for those roads.
Federal funds for the project are available and will be administered through the Kansas Department of Transportation, Browning said. Estimated cost for the project is around $1.1 million, he said.
Two curves near the bridge also will be realigned to handle 55 mph traffic. They currently have advisory speed limit signs of 40 mph.
Commissioners will meet at 6:35 p.m. at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.
