Food Fare to offer kid-friendly fun
Q: I heard that you are sponsoring a Food Fare for youths. Can you tell me more about it?
A: Sure! Many years ago, K-State Research and Extension in Douglas County began playing host to an annual 4-H Food Fare during the winter. Originally, it was created for 4-Hers to increase their food-preparation skills and to provide leadership experiences for older youths. However, this year, we are so excited about the theme and the focus of the day that the planning team agreed we should offer it to any youth (ages 7-18), and adults interested in food, fun and fitness. It is not mandatory for parents to accompany their children, but they are welcome to join in the fun if they are interested.
Food Fare 2006, “100 Years of Magical Moments,” is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in Building 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. As you, our guests, enter the Magical Kingdom, this enchanting place will capture you with memories, dreams and wishes from favorite classics.
To feel the magic, the day will begin with “Be Our Guest,” a musical performance by a group of 4-H teen leaders, followed by a presentation on dining etiquette and common courtesies. Patrick Pesci, program director in hotel and restaurant management at Kansas State University, will share his expertise on fine dining and table manners. Through a hands-on breakfast experience, Pesci will offer guidance on how to set the table, serve the meal, pass the food, use proper manners while eating, and have pleasant conversation around the table. Pesci is well-known for his workshops on hospitality and etiquette as he has presented several years at the Kansas University Medical Center, as well as other universities.
To continue the celebration, our guests will enjoy the four breakout sessions. They will include “The Main Mouse is in the House,” sculpting famous characters using fondant; “Mad Tea Party,” a wonderfully wacky “unbirthday” tea party; “Magic Mirror on the Wall,” how to become the “fairest one of all” using My Pyramid as your guide; and “A Spoonful of Sugar,” a chocolate-lover’s “fundue” delight.
The cast directors include our 4-H food superintendents, Twilla Brown and Jan Hornberger, our 4-H adult and teen leaders, and K-State Research and Extension – Douglas County.
If possible, please pre-register by contacting me at 843-7058 by Monday. The cost is $7 per person, plus we are asking individuals to bring canned food items for the “100 Pounds for 100 Years” 4-H Food Drive. However, no one will be denied participation due to inability to pay. Join in the fun – it’s going to be spectacular.
