Free State, Veritas win; LHS falls

? The Free State High girls basketball team erased an early deficit and beat Shawnee Mission Northwest, 37-36, in an overtime thriller on the road Monday.

Lauren Kimball hit a free throw with four seconds remaining in the overtime, then the Firebirds clinched the victory when Kelsey Harrison deflected SM Northwest’s last-chance inbounds pass from three-quarters court.

“We were very composed throughout all four quarters,” FSHS coach Bryan Duncan said. “We got down, and it didn’t bother us.”

Free State (8-7) was down 28-24 after three quarters, but an 8-4 advantage in the fourth forced the overtime. A back-and-forth extra frame came down to the final seconds, when Kimball was fouled on the floor before going up for a shot. She hit the first one to ice the victory.

Kimball led all Firebirds with 16 points, while Jenna Brantley added 13.

Free State (8-7) will play at Leavenworth on Friday, perhaps with a little more hop to the step, according to Duncan.

“We beat a ranked team on the road,” Duncan said. “That’s a big victory for us to get us going on into sub-state.”

Overland Park – Lawrence High had trouble containing an inside post presence and eventually fell to Shawnee Mission South.

South senior Dana Olsen, a Southern Illinois signee, scored 28 points and hit 12 free throws, helping keep Lawrence High comfortably behind.

“There was a stretch where we turned the ball over three times in a row, and they got layups off of them,” LHS coach Kristin Mallory said. “You can’t do that when you’re trying to crawl back in the game.”

Danielle Bird scored 19 points to lead Lawrence, including three three-pointers, but the Lions were unable to climb out of an early hole.

Drew Huff added 11 points for the Lions (7-8).
