Volunteers needed for upcoming Mardi Gras, AIDS Walk events

The Douglas County AIDS Project needs volunteers for the Mardi Gras Dance on Saturday, Feb. 25, featuring jazz singer Kelly Hunt. Volunteers also are needed for the Annual AIDS Walk on Saturday, April 15. Offices are in the United Way Building on Ridge Court just two blocks east of 25th and Iowa. Immediate volunteer needs

¢ The Disabled American Veterans and Colmery-O’Neill VA Clinic are seeking volunteer drivers to transport Douglas County elderly veterans to and from medical appointments in Topeka and Kansas City. Volunteer drivers rotate driving responsibilities, and the schedules depend upon veterans’ appointments. The VA maintains a government vehicle for use in this program, and the minivan travels from Lawrence to the Topeka and Kansas City VAs. Prospective drivers must pass a physical exam provided free of charge with the VA, a background check and must possess a valid drivers license. ¢ Lawrence Habitat ReStore is looking for volunteers with experience in any of the following categories: hardware, construction, remodeling, retail, cashiering, customer service, janitorial or heavy lifting. Volunteers will assist with the general operation of a building supply store that sells donated building materials, surplus or gently used, at low cost to the community to generate revenue for Lawrence Habitat for Humanity. Volunteers are needed on the evenings of Feb. 8 and 15 to assist with hanging sheetrock in the ReStore, in addition to regular Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to assist with the general operation of the store. ¢ Stepping Stones Daycare enjoys having volunteers to assist teachers in their childcare classrooms anytime Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Times and commitment are flexible. Volunteers will assist by providing care and attention to infants and toddlers in their daily classroom activities.
