Powder investigated

A hazardous-materials crew responded to the Douglas County Health Department on Thursday morning to investigate a report of a mysterious powder in the building.

A man brought a book into the health department, 200 Maine, saying he had found powder inside it, officials said. Bill Stark, division chief for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical, said the powder was contained about 11:30 a.m. Stark said Thursday night that crews found nothing dangerous after running tests. They disposed of the book.

Sheryl Tirol-Goodwin, a spokeswoman for the health department, said the office remained open to the public throughout the morning and wasn’t evacuated.
