Commissioner, wife receive probation

A county commissioner and his wife have each been sentenced to six months’ unsupervised probation stemming from a disturbance late last year at their rural home.

Jere McElhaney and his wife, Debra, both pleaded no contest last week to one count of misdemeanor disorderly conduct. A charge of domestic battery was dropped against each of them.

Their pleas were entered Jan. 26 but were not made public in District Court records until Thursday. As a condition of probation, they will be required to complete an anger-management course. If they violate probation, they could each face 15 days in jail.

“It’s just a family and a personal matter,” Jere McElhaney said Thursday. “Our family is dealing with our situation in an appropriate manner.”
