Haz-mat team investigates report of white powder
A hazardous-materials crew is at the Douglas County Health Department, 200 Maine St., investigating a report of a mysterious powder found at the department earlier this morning.
A man brought a book into the building saying it had a powder inside it, officials said. Bill Stark, division chief for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical, said the powder had been contained as of about 11:30, and crews were trying to determine what the substance is and what to do with it.
Sheryl Tirol-Goodwin, a spokeswoman for the health department, said the office was still open to the public and had not been evacuated.
