Money talks
To the editor:
I wonder why the powers that be thought that building the South Lawrence Trafficway through a wetland and adjacent to a Native American prayer circle would be a good idea?
Did they actually think that such a blatant slap in the face of environmentalists, Native Americans and many others in such a socially conscious city as Lawrence would go through without a fight?
Was the consensus that most could be swayed with “fuzzy math” cost projections, the power of the established “good old boy” network, and the rest of us would be too apathetic to care?
Those who favor ramming the road through the wetlands argue that it was once farmland. So? It is a wetland now. With dwindling natural resources a sad reminder of greed over good sense and conservation, it is disturbing that those involved should show such transparent disregard for those valid concerns.
Then again, what should make this project any different? Substitute coal plant for trafficway and you have the same thing: money over all else. What a sad constant that is.

Lawrence
