Injured hawk treated, given name ‘Avalon’
A 1-year-old red-tailed hawk that was found injured earlier this month at the intersection of Ninth and Avalon streets has been treated, released and named.
The hawk’s name is Avalon, after the area where it was found Dec. 4. It was released by Operation Wildlife of Linwood three days later.
“He just got dinged. He got his bell rung,” said Sheryl Saunders, animal care coordinator for Operation Wildlife in Linwood.
After receiving Dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory drug for brain swelling, on the first day, Avalon flew around in a pen for two more days before being released.
On Dec. 4, Lawrence police had to direct traffic around the hawk as they waited for a representative from the Wildlife and Parks Department to arrive. The bird was then transported to Operation Wildlife for treatment.
