Healthy contest

To the editor:

Even though historians now claim that the phrase “there’s a sucker born every minute” is not attributable to P.T. Barnum, it came to mind while reading about the beauty pageant in Lawrence over the weekend. As the founder of the modern-day beauty pageant, Barnum would have enjoyed the comment made by the organizer of this event, when he claimed that, “The swimsuit competition stresses health, which is important because the No. 1 killer of women older than age 25 is heart disease.” Step right this way, ladies and gentlemen, and for a mere $25, you’ll be able to see how skimpily dressed women have been able to avoid this dreaded disease.
