Driver injured in K-10 wreck dies

The Lawrence man injured in a wreck Dec. 15 on Kansas Highway 10 has died of his injuries, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

Willie D. Paul, 27, died Wednesday after nearly a week in intensive care at Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. He was injured and flown to the hospital the evening of Dec. 15 after a one-vehicle rollover accident on Kansas Highway 10, just east of Lawrence.

Paul’s family members said he did not have life insurance, and they are starting a fund through Warren-McElwain funeral home should anyone wish to help with funeral costs.

“We just don’t have the money, so we’re trying to reach out to the public to help us get him a proper burial,” said Lucy Turner, one of his older sisters.

Paul was one of nine siblings. He moved to Lawrence from Mississippi about 20 years ago, she said, and was applying for a new job and thought he was going to get it when the wreck happened.

The sheriff’s office said Paul was driving a white Chevrolet Corsica before 5 p.m. in the westbound lanes near Noria Road. The car ran off the road.

Blood tests taken at the scene are still pending, but Lt. Doug Woods of the sheriff’s office said there were no immediate signs that alcohol or drugs played a role.
