Duck hunter accidentally shoots his own foot
A Lawrence man accidentally shot himself in the foot with a shotgun Wednesday night during a hunting trip just outside of the city, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.
The man, 50, told authorities that his gun went off while trudging through brush just south of 31st Street and Haskell Avenue, said Lt. Doug Woods, a sheriff’s office spokesman.
The shotgun was in a sling across his chest, and apparently something caught the trigger, which did not have its safety activated.
The man was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and was slated for surgery, Woods said. He was alert and responsive on the scene, and his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
Officials said he was legally hunting ducks on the land, something he often does in the area.
