Concoction fit for a Scrooge

Cooking Connection is a Journal-World feature that prints favorite reader recipes. This week’s featured cook is Charlee Glinka, of Lawrence, with her recipe for the drink Smoking Bishop.

Why it’s special: “This is the drink that Scrooge offers to Bob Cratchit in ‘A Christmas Carol.’ As I think I have seen every movie version of the story – and watch them again each holiday season – this drink is a special way for me to celebrate.”

Smoking bishop

5 sweet oranges

2 bottles cheap, strong red wine

1/4 pound sugar, or to taste

1 bottle ruby port

Cloves

Bake the oranges in the oven until they are light brown. Put five cloves into each fruit. Place them into a warmed bowl that can withstand heat. Add the sugar to the fruit and pour the wine over them (not the port). Cover and place in a warm oven or a warm area for 24 hours.

The next day (24 hours later), squeeze the juice from the fruit into the wine, then pour it through a sieve to remove pulp and cloves. Add the port to the mixture and heat until thoroughly hot. Do not boil. Serve in warmed mugs or glasses and drink hot.
