Many thanks

To the editor:

The Lawrence and Douglas County community has once again responded to help feed hungry people, this time with a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner.

The Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen fed 253 people and St. John’s Catholic Church delivered 240 meals to those homebound and unable to share meals with friends and family. A special thank-you to Jack and Terry Connolly and their family for doing a great job of managing the St. John’s kitchen and delivery of the meals.

LINK thanks everyone who helped with this endeavor: A special thanks to Steve Macelli for cooking the 32 turkeys. He went above and beyond his initial duty, having received 32 frozen turkeys instead of thawed birds. He performed a miracle and had the turkeys delivered to St. John’s at the exact time and day they were needed.

Another special thank you to Jerry Collie and his family for carving the turkeys. And of course a special thank-you to Kendal Simmons, the gravy lady. Thanks to Long John Silver’s for donating gallons and gallons of coleslaw. Thanks to Checker’s for their consistent year-round help with grocery prices. A special thanks to the Community Mercantile for donating the milk.

Thanks to all the volunteers who worked in the kitchens on Thanksgiving Day and thanks to all the drivers who delivered meals to the homebound. Of course the meal would not have been possible without the donations of food from the hundreds of individuals in the community and area. And a special thank-you to individuals who contributed cash to help fund the turkeys and other necessary purchases.

Lawrence and the surrounding area has put “Thanks” and “Giving” together to make a holiday wonderful for many people.
