Children’s needs

To the editor:

Where are the children when we talk about all-day kindergarten? In the recent newspaper article regarding all-day kindergarten there was no mention of children or their needs. It was about what it would cost and parents needing daycare.

It isn’t news that many school decisions are driven by crowd management and finances. But could we at least have a token discussion about what is developmentally appropriate for young children?

Is it important for a 5-year-old child to sit in school all day because we know how brilliant they all are, how they need challenging, how they will never be successful in life if we don’t give them a leg up to get a 30 on the ACT and go off to stardom somewhere?

I’m a parent. How much of our hand-wringing is really about us rather than our children?

Parenting is a lot about quantity of time; school is a lot about quality of time. Sometimes I think we get the two mixed up.

One mom’s opinion.
