Double accident at intersection sends several to hospitals

Two separate accidents occurred nearly simultaneously at a southeastern Lawrence intersection early Saturday, sending one person to the hospital by helicopter ambulance, police said.

The accidents happened just after 12:20 a.m. at East 23rd and Harper streets.

In the first, 25-year-old Thomas Brooksher pulled his car out in front of a car driven by 25-year-old Jennifer Tyler, police spokesman Sgt. Paul Fellers said.

Brooksher’s front-seat passenger, David Easthouse, 18, of Lawrence, was flown to a Kansas City hospital by helicopter for his injuries, Fellers said. A Kansas University Hospital nursing administrator Saturday night said a condition update was unavailable.

Brooksher, of Lawrence, was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and released.

Tyler, of Eudora, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in good condition.

Fellers said police are investigating whether the accident was alcohol-related.

Seconds after the first accident, Brittany Stillian, 17, of Eudora, was waiting to turn her car onto 23rd Street, when she turned in front of a car driven by Christapher Grammer, 25, of Lawrence.

Stillian told police she thought Grammer was turning because he had his turn signal on, Fellers said. Grammer said he was changing lanes to avoid the first accident when he hit Stillian’s car.

One passenger in Grammer’s car was injured.

Police cited Stillian for failing to yield and Grammer for driving with a revoked driver’s license and for having no proof of automobile insurance.

“I think it’s an unfortunate circumstance for those involved,” Fellers said. “It was an interesting one, to say the least.”
