Housing authority purchases apartments

A troubled apartment complex that serves low-income seniors and disabled adults has been purchased by the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority.

Housing Authority Executive Director Barbara Huppee said the agency completed the purchase of the Clinton Place Apartments, 2125 Clinton Parkway, on Friday.

The agency takes over ownership of the 58-unit complex today.

The agency purchased the subsidized housing project for $1.35 million from a Leawood-based investment group.

The apartment complex had been in a foreclosure proceeding.

The property was scheduled to be sold at a foreclosure auction Monday, if a deal with the Housing Authority could not be reached.

Huppee said the purchase by the Housing Authority ensures the property will remain a low-income, subsidized housing project in perpetuity.

Huppee said all the apartment’s current residents will be allowed to stay, but in the future it will be converted into strictly a facility for low-income senior citizens.

Rents would not change for any of the current residents because the rents already are based on the same federal guidelines that the Housing Authority uses.
