TOPEKA State leaders today authorized Kansas University to spend approximately $1.2 million to repair storm damage caused by the March storm that tore through the campus.
The microburst caused about $5.5 million damage to 73 buildings, officials said.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency will pay for more than $4 million in repairs.
The State Finance Council, which includes Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and legislative leaders, unanimously approved allowing KU to authorize the spending.
Sebelius said KU succeeded in discussions with FEMA over repair payments. "The result is very beneficial," she said.

$5.5 million in damages paid by taxpayers.
Wonder how much insurance would have cost?

The state can't insure buildings. We went through all this when the microburst hit.

We also went through the issue of 'self-insurance' when lightening struck Hoch auditorium. Oops, no money to fix it. Sorry.
Luckily, a windfall came through to rebuild it.

Many public entities purchase insurance. I guess I missed out on the discussion about this after the microburst. Seems to me $5.5 million would have purchased a bunch of insurance for a number of years.
