Police nab suspects in thefts of Christmas displays

Vincent Garcia calls himself a “night owl,” but he still couldn’t catch the latest round of holiday thieves.

But Lawrence police may have.

For at least the fifth time since Dec. 1, holiday decorations have been stolen from the front yard of homes in western Lawrence.

According to Lawrence police, both Garcia’s residence, on the 1300 block of Vantuyl Drive, and another nearby home, on Ranchero Drive, were hit by thieves this week.

At Garcia’s home – where he was attempting to win a neighborhood decoration contest – the thieves stole a white angel and an animated Santa from a display in his front yard. That was after someone snatched a snowman from his yard a couple of weeks ago.

“We got hit twice, two separate nights,” Garcia said. “It’s quite upsetting.”

Two other thefts occurred earlier this month on the 1300 block of Pinehurst Circle, also in the neighborhood. Thieves also stole a holiday-themed banner from Taco Johns, 1626 W. 23rd St., last week.

But when thieves tried to snatch decorations from another home on Ranchero Drive early Wednesday morning, residents there called police, who found suspects.

The two men, ages 18 and 19, were issued notices to appear in court on theft charges, police said. Plus, there could be more culprits out there.

“We are still seeking two individuals to speak with in regards to this case,” police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said.

As for the decorating contest, Garcia now has his doubts after the loss of three of his yard’s stars.

“This really affects my chances of winning,” he said.
