GOP hubris

To the editor:

Hubris, n. Exaggerated self-importance; insolent self-conceit. Etymology: Greek. Sample usage: In selecting Phill Kline to replace Paul Morrison, the Republican Party of Johnson County displayed great hubris.

Apparently, Kansas Republicans learned nothing from the recent state-level election results. Phill Kline is swept out of office by an electorate seeking competence and compromise over ideology and extremism. This includes Johnson County, where he is rejected by 65 percent of the voting public. However, in an incredible display of (take your pick) arrogance, stubbornness or outright stupidity, the leadership of the Republican Party foists Kline upon the citizens of Johnson County as their district attorney.

While I am tempted to join those who find this turn of events ironic or even humorous, my reaction is tempered by the fact that the district attorney at the county level actually has to prosecute criminals in a court of law (e.g., serial killers such as John E. Robinson). Being a right-wing ideologue will not get the job done. While the precinct committee had the right to appoint Phill Kline as Johnson County district attorney, they had the responsibility to not do so. It will not serve their citizens well in the short term, nor their Republican Party in the longer term.
