2nd-grader suspended for bringing toy gun

A second-grade student at Sunflower School was suspended for bringing a plastic toy gun to school.

“He did take it out of his backpack when students were gathered in a hallway before school,” said Julie Boyle, communications director for Lawrence’s public schools.

During this week’s incident, the boy made threatening comments to other students, who then told a teacher or a staff member, Boyle said.

The principal, Jason Jones, notified the boy’s parents and the boy was suspended, Boyle said.

Jones sent a letter home with all Sunflower students to make sure their parents know that students can’t bring toys that are shaped like weapons to school.

Boyle said the district does not release records on disciplinary records, so she couldn’t say how long the boy was suspended.
