Apartment project sent back to planning board

Plans for 108 new apartments near the southeast corner of Sixth Street and Stoneridge Drive are heading back to the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission.

Commissioners on a 4-1 vote agreed to have the Planning Commission take another look at the project to see if it could be better designed to fit in with existing single-family homes south of the site.

Neighbors at Tuesday’s meeting expressed strong concerns about how the project would fit into the area.

Mayor Mike Amyx voted against sending the plan back to the Planning Commission, which had approved the plan on a 9-1 vote.
