Farmers market gets festive for holidays

Christine Bial, of Lawrence, looks at some clothes with her daughters, Annie, 6, and Emily, 4, Saturday morning at the Downtown Lawrence Farmers Holiday Market at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2206 E. 23rd St.

Lawrence Farmers Market vendors for several months of the year see one another’s tables stacked with vegetables and meats.

But Saturday’s Farmers Holiday Market at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2206 E. 23rd St., allowed them to change things.

Holiday candies and cheese dips replaced some of the potatoes and other vegetables.

“It’s a chance for producers to make something different – to be a little more creative,” said Jill Elmers, of Lawrence and Moon on the Meadow Farm.

“It’s fun to see what their other lives are,” said Cheryl Blackwell, of Eskridge, who runs Bradford Cheese.

The market included the customary musical entertainment and about 20 vendors on two floors at the hall.

“It’s another way to connect with the community once the regular market ends (in November), and it’s a way for us to be able to do holiday sales a little closer to the actual holiday,” said Denise Skeeba, of Homestead Ranch in Lecompton.

Skeeba and Amy Saunders, of Amy’s Meats in Lawrence, helped organize Saturday’s holiday market.

Skeeba said she was happy with foot traffic at the market Saturday morning. Having the event inside also allows for vendors to bring more craft items, she said.

Christine Bial, Lawrence, and her daughters, Annie, 6, and Emily, 4, looked around at the fresh-baked goods, crafts and clothes for potential gifts.

“It seems like a nice extra touch” with an added personal thought because someone took time to make the gifts, Christine Bial said.
