Day care load
To the editor:
Sunday’s Lawrence Journal-World front page article with the headline, “Switch to ‘all-day K’ would cost city $1M,” could very easily have had another, more accurate, headline: “School board and parents want taxpayer-sponsored day care.”
That’s what this whole idea of all-day kindergarten is really about. Working parents want some financial relief from paying child care providers “several hundreds of dollars a month per child.” I don’t blame them. I also don’t want to pay the tab for them. Juggling money and time is part of the bargain when working couples decide to have children. The expense of care for their children shouldn’t be fobbed off on the taxpayers in the guise of education.
