Senior on football team turns himself in
Safety booked into jail for theft, auto burglary
Kansas University football player Jerome Kemp turned himself in at the Douglas County Jail on Monday after Lawrence Police suspected him of breaking into a car and stealing more than $1,000 in CDs and other items.
Kemp, a senior safety from Wichita, was booked into jail Monday evening on suspicion of auto burglary, theft and criminal damage to property. He posted $2,250 bond Tuesday, jail officials said.
According to a police report, a 22-year-old female KU student reported that Kemp broke into her Volkswagen Jetta parked in the 2500 block of West Sixth Street by smashing the driver’s window before stealing the CDs and other items.
Police turned the report over to District Attorney Charles Branson’s office Tuesday morning, and it had been reviewed Tuesday afternoon. No charges have yet been filed.
Kansas Athletics spokesman Jim Marchiony said Tuesday that he had seen the police report but didn’t know the details of the incident.
Either way, he said, the incident wouldn’t affect Kemp’s standing within the athletics department. As a senior, Kemp had used up his athletic eligibility.
“There’s no games, no practice anymore,” Marchiony said. “His career is over.”
