MADISON, WIS. ? Bonnie Henrickson used the S-word several times Sunday afternoon.

That’s S as in soft.

“We’ve got to work on some toughness,” the Kansas University women’s basketball coach said following a 68-41 flogging by Wisconsin at the Kohl Center. “We’ve got people playing soft.”

Henrickson, who started three freshmen and two sophomores, was disappointed the way her players started the second half.

The Jayhawks were trailing 29-21 at intermission, then the Badgers went on a 19-2 run after the break to blow it open. KU’s players wilted during that sizz and appeared intimidated by the raucous crowd of 5,252.

“(Wisconsin) smelled blood,” Henrickson said. “I looked out there, and we looked dumfounded. When they amped it up, we got stagnant and softer.”

Henrickson swept her bench looking for someone to take charge and stop the bleeding, and no one stepped up.

“My concern is how tough we really are,” the third-year KU coach said. “We’ve got to have someone have some moxie, some toughness.”

Jolene Anderson and Janese Banks paced the Badgers (8-1) with 15 points each. Anderson led all players with nine rebounds. Despite pulling down two more rebounds in the first half (19-17), Kansas was outrebounded, 40-33.

Freshman Sade Morris was KU’s lone player to score in double figures with 10. The Jayhawks shot just 30 percent from the field and committed 20 turnovers that resulted in 24 UW points.

Kansas (4-2) will return home Wednesday to entertain South Dakota State to begin a three-game homestand.
